How to work out any tip in your head

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left ($64.00 becomes $6.40).
  • 15%: take 10% and add half of it ($6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60).
  • 20%: double the 10% figure ($6.40 × 2 = $12.80).
  • 18%: take 20% and subtract a tenth of it, or just use the chart above.

For a split bill, add the tip to the total first, then divide by the number of people. If one person ordered much more, split the food by what each ate and share the tip in proportion.

How much should you tip?

These are typical United States ranges for table service and common services. They are customs, not rules, and they vary by region and by how good the service was.

Situation Typical tip
Sit-down restaurant 15–20% (18–20% for good service)
Large party or complicated order 18–20%, check for an automatic gratuity first
Bar $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab
Food delivery 15–20%, usually at least a few dollars
Taxi or rideshare 15–20%
Hair and beauty services 15–20%
Coffee shop counter Optional; a dollar or a round-up is common
Hotel housekeeping A few dollars per night, left daily

Before you tip, look at the bill. Some restaurants add a service charge or automatic gratuity, especially for groups, and tipping again on top is optional.

Should you tip on the pre-tax amount?

Many people tip on the subtotal before tax, because tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the total including tax is also common and simply gives a slightly larger tip. Either is acceptable.

Tipping in other countries

Customs differ a lot, so check before you travel.

  • United Kingdom: a service charge of about 10–12.5% is often added to the bill; if it is, no extra tip is needed.
  • Canada: similar to the US, usually 15–20%.
  • Germany, Austria, Switzerland: rounding up or adding around 5–10% is normal; the service is usually included in the price.
  • France, Italy, Spain: service is typically included; small extra amounts for good service are appreciated but not expected.
  • Australia and New Zealand: tipping is not expected; round up for exceptional service if you wish.
  • Japan: tipping is generally not practised and may cause confusion.

When in doubt, ask locally or check the menu and bill for a service line.
