Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, divide by 1.2: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so the VAT is £20. A common mistake is to take 20% off the gross price, which gives £96 and understates the net amount.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, multiply by 1.2: £100 × 1.2 = £120. The VAT itself is the net price × 0.2, so £20 here.
What are the current UK VAT rates?
The standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate of 5% applies to things like home energy and children's car seats, and some goods, such as most food and children's clothes, are zero-rated. Check GOV.UK for which rate applies to a specific product or service.
Does this work for sales tax in the US?
Yes for the arithmetic: use 'Add VAT' with a custom rate equal to your combined state and local sales tax. Note that US prices are usually shown before tax, while VAT prices in the UK and EU usually include it.
