Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule of thumb is to aim for 25 times your expected annual spending, which matches the '4% rule' of withdrawing about 4% of your savings in the first year of retirement. Others suggest saving 10 to 15 times your salary by the time you retire. These are guidelines, not guarantees; your needs depend on your lifestyle, health care costs and other income such as Social Security.

What is an employer match?

Many employers add money to your 401(k) when you contribute, for example matching 50% of your contributions up to 6% of your salary. It's effectively part of your pay, so contributing enough to get the full match is commonly recommended. Enter the match here as the percentage of your salary your employer adds in total.

What return should I assume?

Long-term stock market returns have historically averaged roughly 7% per year after inflation, or around 10% before it, but individual years vary a lot and the future may differ. A more cautious assumption, such as 5% to 6%, gives a more conservative estimate.

What are the 401(k) contribution limits?

The IRS sets annual limits on 401(k) contributions and adjusts them periodically, with extra 'catch-up' amounts for people 50 and older. Check IRS.gov for the current figures. This calculator doesn't enforce limits.
