Encrypt & Decrypt Files
Lock any file with a password so you can send it safely by email or chat, and unlock it again with the same tool. Everything happens in your browser.
Your files never leave your device — everything runs in your browser.
If you forget the password, the file cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. Share the password through a different channel than the file.
How to Use
- 1Choose 'Encrypt', then drop the file you want to protect.
- 2Type a strong password and confirm it, then click Encrypt to download the .enc file.
- 3Send the .enc file by any channel, and share the password through a different channel, such as a phone call or another app.
- 4To open it, choose 'Decrypt', drop the .enc file, enter the password and download the original file.
How the encryption works
Your password is stretched into a 256-bit key with PBKDF2 using 600,000 rounds and a random salt, which makes guessing passwords slow. The file is then encrypted with AES-256-GCM, which also detects tampering, so a wrong password or a changed file fails to open instead of giving garbage.
Sending a file securely
The safest habit is to send the encrypted file and the password through two different channels, for example the file by email and the password by phone or a messaging app. Never put the password in the same message as the file.
Limits to know
Encryption protects the file's contents, not the fact that you sent it. A weak or reused password is the usual weak point. Large files use a lot of memory because they are processed in the browser, so keep them under about 150 MB.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I send documents securely?
Encrypt the file with a strong password, send the encrypted file by email or chat, and give the recipient the password through a different channel, such as a phone call. Anyone who intercepts the file alone cannot read it.
How strong is the encryption?
The tool uses AES-256-GCM, a strong modern standard, with a key derived from your password using PBKDF2 and a random salt. The strength then depends on your password, so choose a long, unique one.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Encryption and decryption run in your browser using its built-in cryptography, so the file and password never leave your device.
Can you recover my file if I forget the password?
No. We never see your password or file, so nobody can recover it. Keep the password somewhere safe, such as a password manager.
Who can open the .enc file?
Anyone with the file and the password can open it using this tool. The file name is encrypted too, so it is hidden until decryption.
Is this the same as password-protecting a PDF?
No. A PDF password only works for PDFs and depends on the reader software. This tool works for any file type and creates a separate encrypted file that must be decrypted here.
