How to Extract Text from Any Image or Screenshot (No App to Install)

You've probably hit this before: a screenshot with useful text, a photo of a whiteboard, or a scanned page — and no easy way to copy the words out. That's exactly what OCR (Optical Character Recognition) solves.

What OCR Actually Does

OCR software looks at the shapes in an image and matches them against known letterforms to reconstruct the underlying text. It's the same technology banks use to read checks and postal services use to sort mail — just running quietly in your browser instead of a specialized scanner.

It's not magic, though. OCR accuracy depends heavily on:

  • Image sharpness — blurry or low-resolution photos produce garbled results
  • Contrast — dark text on a light background works best; low-contrast images (like a photo taken at an angle in dim light) are harder
  • Font and handwriting — printed text is far more reliable than handwriting
  • Orientation — tilted or rotated text reduces accuracy significantly

When OCR Is Genuinely Useful

  • Pulling a quote or paragraph out of a screenshot instead of retyping it
  • Digitizing a printed document or receipt you photographed
  • Extracting a phone number, code, or address from a picture someone sent you
  • Turning a photo of handwritten notes on a whiteboard into searchable text (with lower accuracy)

Tips for Better Results

  1. Crop tightly around the text before uploading — less background noise means fewer misreads.
  2. Straighten the image if the text is tilted; even a slight rotation trips up character recognition.
  3. Increase brightness/contrast first if the photo is dim.
  4. Pick the right language — an OCR engine set to the wrong language will misread accented characters and unfamiliar letter combinations.

Try It Yourself

You can extract text from any image or screenshot with our Image to Text (OCR) tool — it runs entirely in your browser using an on-device recognition model, supports English, Turkish, and Spanish, and your image is never uploaded anywhere.
